Healthy Heart Homemade Pretzels

I checked out the Healthy Heart Handbook from the library after trying a recipe that I found online that was from the book. The recipe section starts out with snack foods - perfect!

I haven't had a soft pretzel in years, so I knew right away that I wanted to start with that. You'll notice that in the picture above I even made one batch of the pretzels in the shape of hearts- I am a cooking dork :)

The recipe was very simple, just whole wheat flour, yeast, a little sugar and a little salt. I mixed it up with a spoon and then I figured it was time to kneed the dough. I am not sure I have ever had a chance to kneed dough before so when I got to this step I froze for a moment.

And as Zoey was walking around the kitchen squeeking I remembered that when cats are purring and stretching out their paws it is sometimes called "kneeding bread" so I pretended I was Zoey in the act of purring and I came out with this:

Next I rolled out some strings and shaped them into pretzels. Into the oven for about 10 minutes:

Fresh out of the oven and ready for Zoey's sniff test:

She liked them. I am especially convinced that she appreciated the heart shaped one that I made for her.

They were a little bland for my tastes. I tried making some with garlic salt for flavor, but I actually preferred them plain. They tasted like healthy wheat bread sticks in fun pretzel shapes. So, they weren't exactly what you get at a baseball game, but they were fun to make and they made a great side for the soup we had for dinner.
