We have had some sunny days in Oregon which is a rare winter treat. All the sun is making me more interested in sandwiches so my interest in homemade hummus has resurfaced. I found this recipe in the August 2008 issue of Oxygen Magazine. I have been trying to find a hummus that has the same taste as my favorite store-bought hummus and I thought this one might do the trick.
Ingredients:
4 oz roasted rep peppers in a jar (drained)
1 can garbanzo beans (or 1 1/2 cup garbanzo beans if you soak your own)
2 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 clove of garlic
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
Directions:
1. Add all ingredients to your food processor:
2. Blend:
3. I tried this on bread with tomatoes and in pita bread with romaine lettuce.
Review: This was okay hummus, but not as good as my store-bought variety. I am not sure how to describe this but it tasted sort of too "neon red". Perhaps I should have used less red pepper.
I am still in search of my perfect homemade hummus. Do any of you have a hummus recipe that you love?

Other than your recipe for "Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Among Us", I've never been able to make good homemade hummus. It always seems to come out WAY too garlicky. Ack!!!
You crack me up. The comment you left about me having the ingredients for that soup. Funny stuff. If you didn't realize I actually had that listed on the same post that I was going to make that. haha. I've got it cooking now.
I also made the dill hummus and while I like dill I'm not crazy about this dill hummus recipe I tried. Next I'm going to try a roasted red pepper hummus recipe! You read my mind!
neon red as a flavor is too funny :) though it does make sense.
My co-op, PCC, makes the best hummus because they put in some fresh herbs (parsley).
I use my step mother's recips, which off the top of my head is close to your recipe except:
- no roasted peppers
- more garlic
- tahini (I add it to taste - prob 2 tbs)
- cumin
- more lemon juice
- black pepper
she has measurements, but I pretty much go by taste.
my husband makes incredible hummus. he swears the secret ingredient is citric acid; you can buy it with the canning supplies, sometimes, or else at the health food store. it gives it a kick that you can't get from anything else. he discovered this ingredient when topsecretrecipes.com posted a recipe for a store bought brand of hummus that we really liked...but didn't like all the "stuff" in it. anyhow, you can look it up on their website, but it costs like $.79 for the recipe. oh, also, he doesn't use all chickpeas, he adds in a can of something else, refried beans or pinto or great northern, it helps make it creamier. anyhow, try the citic acid...good luck!
